25th of September 2010 - Leather Barrel Creek
With all the snow hanging around at high altitudes Tony and I decided we’d give The Corrie a go and see if it was still in condition. We got our free season passes from Thredbo after we showed them our Perisher Season Passes (sadly only valid for the day, but a freebie is a freebie) and had a quick run in The Basin before riding Karel’s for a bit of laziness. When I went to take my first photo I realised I’d left the camera battery at home, so Tony has kindly donated his photos for this report. But since I still had my video camera in my bag there is a bit of footage in this report to watch.
With high cloud all day and intermittent low cloud things took a while to soften up and with the snow at the Corrie still rock hard and we decided to leave the only line left, which only a billy goat could ski. Instead we decide to head towards the Twin Humps and skied down the northern end of the Corrie on very firm snow until the last 100m when it softened up.
We started towards the Corrie and dropped in for a quick run down to the tree line on perfect corn, ripe for the picking. The low cloud came in for good just as we arrived at the Twin Humps, but the face of the main hump was in excellent condition and we continued to enjoy great corn through the trees all the way down to Leather Barrel Creek. After another skin we had another great run in the trees to bring us to the bottom of the Spur. After the long slog back up to Mt Ramshead we made our way back through the mist to Thredbo and skied back to the village to conclude a great day in the BC.
